…urge Nigerians to explore other peaceful ways of holding government accountable
As some groups across the country expressed resolve to embark on a nationwide protest tagged ‘endbadgovernance,’ in response to widespread economic hardship, a Civil Society Organisation, Advocate for Better Leadership and Sustainable Rural Development Initiative (ABLE) has warned against plans by some groups and individuals to organise a nationwide protest against the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
The Director General ABLE, Comrade Destiny Madu in a statement expressed concern that embarking on a nationwide protest against the government would be counterproductive, judging from the mood of the country.
He advised those who are aggrieved about the state of affairs in the country, to explore peaceful means of engaging the government.
Comrade Madu who acknowledged the economic hardship in the country, which he said was precipitated by rising cost of goods and services, coupled with rising inflation, however insisted that staging a nationwide protest would worsen the situation.
He called on Nigerians to exercise patience with President Tinubu’s administration, adding that the administration inherited a lot of liabilities from the immediate past government.
According to him, “President Tinubu is not a magician. He inherited a lot of liabilities from Buhari’s administration.
“Though President Tinubu was too hasty in announcing the withdrawal of fuel subsidy payment, but the underlying issue is that things has gone very bad under the watch of Buhari and it cannot be fixed under one year of Tinubu’s administration.
“As citizens, what we need now is to persevere and cooperate with the government to resuscitate the ailing economy and improve security.
“Experience during the endsars protest also shows that hoodlums and miscreants can hijack a peaceful protest, unleash mayhem on innocent people, destroy and loot property. Nigeria cannot afford to lose lives, property and loss of productive hours, in the name of protest.
On the other hand, Comrade Madu called on those in government to avoid flamboyant lifestyle and other acts capable of infuriating the suffering masses.
“They should show modesty, accountability and transparency in the conduct of government business. No amount of sacrifices can be too much in the efforts to salvage our dear country.
On the recent creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development, Comrade Madu noted that the government listens to some regions’ demands, more than others.
“Some regions cry to high heavens only when they feel a bit of the pain, which others have been experiencing for long.
“We are all Nigerians, aspiring for a better country. Injustice to a person, tribe, religion or zone is injustice to all.
“We were patient with former President Buhari’s administration despite all odds. The administration, because of the struggle for power, caused us all manner of pain then and even still now, through various forms of insecurity.
“Today, we must be careful what we fight for. The government’s resolve to restore local government autonomy is a good sign. Let’s urge the government to do more, so as to alleviate our suffering. Let’s explore other peaceful ways of holding the government accountable
