Executive Director, Urban-Rural Environmental Advocacy, publicly known as Urban-Rural Environmental Defenders (U-RED has lamented the negative impact of insecurity on Nigeria’s mining sector.

The group in a statement signed by God’spower Martins, Executive Director U-RED, and made available to Journalists, in Abuja, titled, ‘another dark side of mining in Nigeria’, the group recalled the recent ambush of a Chinese mining convoy in Kogi State, which resulted in the death of a soldier and the abduction of four Chinese nationals

They noted that the attack is a stark reminder of the security challenges facing the mining sector in Nigeria and condemn the attack.

“While we totally condemn the criminal act of the gunmen, we register our heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of our gallant soldier who died in the sad incident, as well as our wish for a fast recovery for the wounded Mobile Police officer.

“Against this backdrop we have to examine the broader issues about this incident, especially the predatory nature of miners

“The high militarization of mining company operators reveals the predatory and exploitative nature of the miners.

“The environment and rights of frontline communities are blatantly neglected as they extract critical minerals, highlighting an ongoing challenge we must rise to address.

“We are not against the use of security agencies for the protection of life and property, but using them for exploitative purposes is a significant concern. Mining companies must not spend recklessly to protect themselves from regulatory inspectors, communities’ access and other stakeholders’ access while dodging their responsibilities and degrading the environment.

“On the rights of frontline communities, the involvement, intelligence and rights of frontline communities must be embraced, engaged and respected. Mining companies must prioritize the all-inclusiveness of these communities as it is essential to create a genuine sense of transparency and accountability that benefits all.

In conclusion, U-RED called on security agencies to ensure the abducted Chinese nationals are rescued unhurt and the perpetrators of the dastardly act arrested, prosecuted, and face the wrath of the law if found guilty.

“It is highly important that we prioritize engaging community people at all stages of exploration. Their local intelligence and active involvement, which allows them to own the process will to a very large extent curtail this kind of incident, making it less likely to happen if not completely eliminated.

“By working together and prioritizing community engagement, we can create a safer mining space that benefits everyone involved, “ the group concluded.
